Department of History and Archaeology
This interdisciplinary program aims to unearth and interpret the Palaeolithic archaeology and study the palaeoenvironment of the Middle Pleistocene on Lesbos. A second aim of the program is the promotion of the prehistoric cultural and natural heritage into a reference point for the sustainable economic development of the island. Around Rodafnidia - Lisvori, a Lower Palaeolithic open-air site on the Kalloni Gulf, surface survey, excavation, geoarchaeological and geophysical research are conducted. The investigations in the field and the lab are carried out by an international team of researchers. Archaeological evidence unveiled in fluvial deposits of the shows that Middle Pleistocene hominin activity took place on the shores of a large lake. The unique lithic artifacts show Acheulean affinities and connect the early archaeology of the Aegean to that Africa and Eurasia.
