Marina Tzakosta is Professor of Language Development and Pedagogy of the Preschool Child at the Department of Preschool Education of the University of Crete. Her scientific interests focus on the development of mother languages, the teaching and learning of second languages, language difficulties, language contact and language change, orthography learning and teaching, dialectology and the teaching of dialects.

She holds a BA and a MA in linguistics and phonological development from the Department of Philology of the University of Crete (1996, 1999). She received her Ph.D. from the University of Leiden Center for Linguistics with a scholarship granted by the Dutch State (2004). During her Ph.D. studies she was a visiting student at the Department of Linguistics, Umass/Amherst. Her postdoc research on the development of Greek morphology by second language learners of Greek was financed by the Greek State Scholarships Foundation (2005-2006) and was carried out the Department of Philology of the University of Patras. Except from the Department of Preschool Εducation of the University of Crete, she has taught at the Department of Philology/ University of Patras, the Department of Philology/ University of Crete, the Department of Mediterranean Studies/ University of the Aegean.

She has published more than 100 studies in national and international journals, edited volumes and conference proceedings, 7 books and edited volumes and 3 educational materials. She has participated in more than 20 research projects as a principal investigator or research associate. Representatively, in 2014 she was awarded a highly competitive grant by the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation in order to create the Digital Museum of Greek Oral History (MOHI), a pool of dialectal data and local history (www.mohi.edc.uoc.gr). She has also been a visiting scholar at the Stanley Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies/ Princeton University in 2018. She is currently a member of the team which is in charge of the training of preschool teachers and English language instructors regarding the introduction of English in Preschool Εducation (2021-2022).
